Speed skating, National Canadian Team
A research protocol has been developed by Dr. André Brossard, researcher and , Michel Portmann, researcher and PhD in physiology, for the Canadian National speed skating team, in collaboration of Éric Bédard, national coach.  Results will be available in June.

It’s a specific mechanical stimulation of the cutaneous areas (applying a light pressure on the skin). That cutaneous pressure increases the neurogolical vigilance (the reflex activity of the brain) when applied to one of the main three joints of the human body, i.e.: the wrist, the lower back and the ankle. That light stimulation causes an increase in muscular strength, endurance to lactic acid, reaction speed and improves the use of aerobic energy (VO2Max).




 

That increase of the neurological vigilance (reflex) delays the sign of muscular fatigue, therefore delaying the moment when our system orders a postural change (or compensation) which, with time or when doing restrictive and repetitive movements, develops acute or chronic injuries.

The physical performance (anaerobic and aerobic energy) of the sportsman, sportswoman or athlete increases by 4 to 10%, depending on his/her parameters and level of training.  




 

The football team of the Université Laval, the Rouge et Or, uses this technology, which is integrated in their lumbo-sacral joint girdle. The national Canadian swimming team also participated in the endurance to lactic acid validation tests and wears the technology inside their bathing suits.  Negotiations are actually taking place with major sports equipment manufacturers to integrate the technology in their up market products.  More and more industries ask for the technology to be integrated in their workers underwear, in order to reduce the incidence of injuries related to repetitive and restrictive movements.
